A new option at Bookmobile, digital foil! We still offer old-school metal die foil stamps, but digital foil is a new and great option for an intricate or large or detailed foil design. So far digital foil is available on matte- or soft touch matte-laminated paperback covers, in gloss gold or gloss silver.
Rust Belt Review Volume 7: A Comics Anthology
I thought a romance or fantasy special edition print run would be our first digital foil title, but it turned out to be a comics anthology!
Rust Belt Review is published by our own Sean Knickerbocker, and features serialized and short fiction comics. It’s a 9-¼” x 12” paperback, and the cover art by M.S. Harkness looks fantastic with digital silver foil accents! Buy your copy here.
A foil stamp with a metal die would not have been able to handle the fine details of the cover art, for instance: the diamond and bell or the stars in the pinball levers. The metal dies we use for foil stamps are limited to a 30 square inch area—this cover is 111 square inches—so registering multiple dies and the border would not have worked.

With digital foil we’re printing the metallic, in a sense. We print the cover, laminate the cover, then print the foil area on the laminated cover, then foil that.
Digital Foil vs. Foil Stamping
Digital foil is an option for paperback covers with matte or soft touch matte lamination, and we offer gloss gold or gloss silver. We can special order a different finish or color on request. Digital foil is more economical than a foil stamp—there is no die cost. Keep in mind that a digital foil lays flat on the cover’s surface; there’s no impression left from a digital foil (a nice tactile advantage of a foil stamp).
A foil stamp has more options: gloss or matte gold or silver, flat black or white, plus embossing or debossing. (We can special order a different finish or color on request.) A foil stamp is available with all our cover lamination choices (gloss, matte, soft touch matte, also uncoated cover stock), as well as hardcover cases, dust jackets, and slip cases. See our full foil stamp guidelines and recommendations here.
